Tea is a huge part of many cultures, and Korea has its own unique tradition in regards to it. I had the pleasure of visiting a traditional Korean tea room recently, and to say that the experience was amazing would be an understatement. As soon as I stepped through the entrance, I was transported to a magical garden seemingly in a different world from the concrete jungle not five steps away. I was instantly soothed by the serene atmosphere created by the thick canopy of greenery and the hushed silence. Walking up the stone steps, I approached the hanok (Korean traditional house) tea room and was greeted by the aroma of jujube tea and cinnamon. There were little tables with cushions arranged artfully around the room, with folding screens strategically placed for privacy. Quiet chatter filled the room, which, mixed with the sound of classical gayageum (Korean traditional string instrument) music, created a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

There was a variety of teas available, ranging from omija (magnolia berry) to jujube. On top of the diversity of teas available, traditional Korean desserts were offered as well, such as tteok (rice cake) and other confections. I ordered the sweet pumpkin bingsu, which is a popular shaved ice dessert in Korea that features a variety of different flavours; the original being red bean. The bingsu was served with homemade red bean paste and pumpkin puree. The sweet mixture of pumpkin and red bean combined with the refreshing shaved ice made a perfect cure for the heat. As well as the shaved ice treat, I ordered ssanghwacha, a traditional Korean tea made of a blend of peony, jujube, ginger, arrowroot, cinnamon, and a variety of other ingredients. Ssanghwacha has been consumed for generations, and is considered to be a medicinal beverage in Korea because of its many health benefits. Not only does it warm the body and soul, but it also helps to relieve fatigue and stimulate recovery from illness.

The warm tea, calming atmosphere, and delicious dessert made for a truly unforgettable experience. I was grateful to be able to take part in a tradition so deeply rooted in my culture, and appreciated every moment of it. Thus, I wanted to share this experience with others, in an effort to raise more knowledge and appreciation for Korea's culture and traditions. All in all, I hope this recap of my recent experience at a traditional Korean tea room has been successful at piquing your interest for at least one aspect of Korea's culture.
